“Give, Barter, and Share...”

Sometimes I feel over whelmed by all of the organizations, causes, and groups I could join. But then on the opposite side I am encouraged, because there are numerous people out there who care and want to do good in the world. It is just how does one decide where to put their time? I have come to the place where I ask if it fits into my priority list than it is a “yes,” for me. What??? By that I mean I am able to do it without taking away too much time from my family and I can do it at a low cost. That is what drew me to blogging. I can write when my children are sleeping and my blog is free to write. It is exciting to meet other people who are just was enthusiastic about blogging and technology as I am.

One of my favorite t.v. characters is “Carrie” she is a writer, but does not live this glamours life for following her passion. I think one can get driven by the status and prestige that their gifts can bring. If you really search the meaning of the “why,” and how it can enhance others life’s, then more fulfillment occurs. My philosophy has been “give, barter, and share.” Being that fitness, health and wellness are my passions I get a lot of questions and requests. It is always that odd feeling I get when someone asks about fees or cost. I have a career that provides for my family (and it is my dream career) and I am not one who needs excess in their life. This is how I came to my philosophy over the years.

Some of the most fun times have come from bartering and sharing. For example, my cousin asked my help with some exercises. I came up with a video for some of my favorite exercises and shared it with her. She was very sweet and did my hair and even put high lights in it. This meant a lot because I am not one to spend more than a hair cut on my hair. We shared lots of memories as she did my hair and I was thankful for her sharing her gift with me. Over the summer I trained a girl who was going back to college and in our barter system she babysat for us. My husband and I got to enjoy a weekly date night and my children just fell in love with having her come over. Recently, I have had the opportunity to meet some people in my profession who enjoy sharing. When teachers share, it impacts our students. When this happens our society changes in a positive way. There are teachers out there who give extra, just for the enjoyment to see the positive changes in their students. This always brings a new kind of energy to try something new, which allows you to grow as people and professionals.

I did not come up with philosophy by myself. I just reflected on my life and how I got to be where I am at. I have fulfilled many dreams, because of the people who were willing to give, barter, and share with me through out my life. I have had people who shared their knowledge with me on how to lift, to do a fitness routine, about teaching the list goes on, but never asked me to pay, because they too loved the philosophy of “give, barter, share.”

I am sure if you thought of what you could give to someone, what you could barter or share, you too will find happiness in that....People come into our lives for a reason and you come into theirs for reason, makes you smile to think of that, right?

  1. Hello Mrs. Spaulding,

I had been looking out for a new blog and it feels great to be the first one commenting! Sometimes I feel the same way. I am so active after school each day of the week that I feel as though I have neglected my academics as well as my family. Believe it or not, I did not get home until 6 p.m. every day of last week because I had Class of 2012 and Yearbook Club on Tuesday. I had Newspaper Club and a meeting with the DJ for Prom on Wednesday. I am this year’s student leader of the PULSE Program, which is a program designed to educate students that would like to be apart of the health field one day, on Thursday, and plowed snow for two neighbors on Friday. As you can see, I am really busy and always active, but it’s hard to prioritize which events are important because they all benefit some type of the community. One club at school called Key Club requires a $15 “membership” fee to join and volunteer, but why pay to volunteer when I have already done 100+ hours of community service and assist my peers with homework, neighbors with snow removal, and work with the Mayor of the Village of where I live for FREE? Lol, I like how we have similar aspects of life. I give to my community, the school community, and the community as a whole and share information that have lead others to receive scholarships and opportunities that I would have loved to experience and never receive one single, “thank you.” But when I do volunteer, give, or share, my soul feels warm and happy on the inside which is most important. From my prior experiences of giving and sharing throughout the community, I just found out that I am being recognized for all the hard work and dedication that I put into those activities. I would like to share them personally with you (via e-mail). Thank you for always writing uplifting blogs of the week because they truly do uplift me and get me through the week.

    Have a great week! :)

  3. Woohoo! You have a new blog! I've been looking out for one. First of all, I'm glad you shared this motto by blogging. I agree on the time thing though. There are a lot of things that I'm not sure how to fit into my schedule. I have difficulty deciding what I should put first in my schedule.

I'm not exactly sure on what I'm going to do for a career, and there's nothing that I am significantly good at, but I do try to participate in volunteer projects and do other projects and activities to help others: strangers, friends, or even family. I give time that I have and try to do my best to assist in many ways as possible. I'm not really sure if this is the same as what you're talking about though. One day, when I know what I actually want to do though, I do indeed want to help other people with my talents/skills. All I can think about that I do for others is babysit, but I get paid for it... So I also don't think it's the same. But I do give a lot of my time to babysitting, especially on school days. I babysit almost every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday along with also randomly working. (That's why I don't know if I'll be able to join the softball team at West this year, I seem to put my job and babysitting before everything else.) Usually babysitting deprives me of time with my family, because as soon as I get home I need to start my homework. Oops. I've started to ramble.

I am glad that you have fulfilled your dream goals and you are happy with the way things are. (I'm also glad you get to spend time with your husband (and family). I'm not sure how many people would think that stands out, but it stood out to me. Spending time with him is important and I'm happy you get at least one day a week.) I am also happy when teachers share knowledge with each other and with the students, it helps more than most students would think.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your thoughts on the subject.

  4. To me, volunteering is something that i have to be part of. I am currently volunteering at an outside Organization that deals with higher education among Hispanic communities. I sometimes wonder why I do it though, But I know that spending time participating in political events and being a dreamer students means a lot for me because i am fighting for what’s right. Although change doesn't occur fast, for now i am enjoying my time participating in an organization.

  5. Words of the wise. I also like the idea of bartering! Since I don't ever have money, I would rather help someone out to get something in return. If I have to do something for my mom she might give me something extra. Afterwords it always feels good because you don't have to worry about paying people back and you get more benefits from the experience in return.

  6. I think sharing is really good! If you dont, it not only makes you look bad but who's going to want to share with you. I dont really like sharing when it comes to sharing things that I buy with my own money, in my opinion why should i share something with someone and their enjoying something that they didn't pay for, I had to work for the money and they didn't do anything but their still getting something.. But then again if they share with me why wouldn't i share with them.

  9. I am big on volunteering and helping the community. I love doing good deeds and I never expect anything in return because inside I already feel good. One of the most rewarding feelings ever is knowing you've just helped someone or the community out. It's always nice to get something in return but I am the type of person to say, "Oh no, don't worry about it!" I love the concept of this!

  10. I also like the concept of its better to give than to receive. It feels good when you know youre doing well and that by giving back or volunteering you can help others do the same. Most people dont like the idea of volunteering but youll never know when youll need help also.
